Questions and answers
What is a NIE?
The NIE is a Foreigners’ Identification Number (“Nùmero de Identidad de Extranjeros”) issued by the Spanish state to all non-Spanish people undertaking certain activities in Spain.
What do you need a NIE for?
Practically any significant activity in Spain, whether you are resident there or not, requires a NIE and this list is by no means exhaustive:
- - Buying a property
- - Renting a property
- - Obtaining residency
- - Registering for tax
- - Signing documents at the Notary
- - Buying a car
- - Receiving an inheritance
- - Starting a business
- - Becoming director of a company
- - Enrolling at university
- - Registering with the Town Hall which in turn is vital for many activities
What is involved?
Filling in an application form EX14 and presenting it together with your passport and documentary proof of your motive for the application to officials at the Foreigners’ Office at the Police Station.
Anyone requiring a NIE but still living in the UK has the option of going to one of various Spanish consulates around the country to initiate an application. This is perfectly valid option if you allow plenty of time for the application to work through the system. You may want to look at her low cost Self Service option to support such a move.
What is all the fuss about?
There are some good reasons why NIE applications have got something of a reputation for being a hassle, although the stresses are probaly exaggerated by firms offering to “help” at 200€ a time.
- Foreigners’ Offices have been notorious for long queues in the past and most operate a ticket system with only a limited number of tickets given out which often means people are turned away. On the other hand, particularly if you get there early, you may be surprised at how smoothly it all goes when you are prepared for the worst.
- Obviously the forms and service are in Spanish so you may need some language support.
- You will have to submit a document as a motive for your NIE application and this may require advice or clarification. Note that if you are resident in Spain and are applying for NIE and residency together you may not have to provide the motive. At some police stations the "motive document" is not required or at most they will just glance at a rental or purchase contract. If in doubt email for advice.
- Finally it can be a time-consuming process especially if you are not in Spain to apply; people with specific and urgent needs for a NIE (completing on a house purchase or sale) can come unstuck with the timing. This is actually something that depends on the police station. Sometimes you will get your NIE on the day of application, but normally you will be given a receipt and asked to return to collect it another day.
Can I do it without assistance?
If you do your research and put together the documentation methodically you should be able to apply for a NIE unassisted though language may be a barrier for some.
